Project Overview

This project focuses on building an interactive digital twin experience for technical operations training in the airline industry. The goal is to create a 3D web-based tour that enables tech ops and maintenance teams to familiarize themselves with critical equipment such as deicing trucks, ULD containers, and hangar tools without requiring physical access. Users can orbit around the model, interact with specific components through clickable callouts, and observe basic part functionality through animated elements. The tour also provides key insights into each part’s function and technical specifications.

Process

I started by using Figma to design wireframes and UI prototypes that defined the user experience across devices. From there, I modeled and textured the assets based on real-world equipment, aiming for high visual accuracy. I rigged and animated components such as doors, panels, and moving parts to match how they function in real life, enhancing the authenticity of the training experience. The initial prototype was built using 3DVista to structure the interactive flow. As the project progressed, I encountered the limitations of no-code tools and transitioned to a custom pipeline using glTF, Three.js, and WebGL. I also integrated Blender’s Python API and material variants to gain full control over interactions and performance.

Final Result

A few fully functional 3D tours have been published and are currently being refined. Each tour includes rigged and animated components that replicate real-world behavior, such as opening panels or doors, allowing users to better understand how the equipment operates. The next phase focuses on streamlining the development pipeline to build a scalable, reusable system that can ingest any 3D model and structured callout data to auto-generate a complete web-based tour. I am actively expanding this framework using Three.js, Blender scripting, and UI templating to create a modular tool that supports rapid training deployment across a wide range of aircraft ground equipment and procedures.
